WELL, The reason people like me need a beast like that is for Live Visuals or "VJing" which require large numbers of outputs or larger outputs in general. Most stages at music festivals these days require 2-3 4K outputs Also, because we can create and render content on the road more easily, though that's quite rare

As to who buys something like this, I recently bought a gaming laptop. Not this new or advanced, not something I can afford. I got it because I have a YT channel and needed the GPU processing for video capture and editing. The one I have weighs 10 lbs, so not lightweight. Forgot to mention the YT channel is part time. My full time job is as a travel nurse. So I have a PC for home use and the laptop for the road.

I'm using the msi titan gt80 2qd you reviewed in 2015 I believe. Chungus of a laptop at just under 10lbs, basically that era's desktop replacement and I love every bit of it. I use it as my primary gaming device, got 3 mini display ports on it and an HDMI, so if the default monitor isn't my thing I got options. I carry from my room where I game to the living room where I use it for D&D, to work where I use it for spreadsheets (and also show my boss random cool shit I can make it do) and most of all it's a LAN party guy's dream. Not as much a pain in the ass as a full on tower/monitor combo, but still beefy enough to contend with them (at least back when this was released). Overall, I really think if I buy another laptop it'll be another desktop replacement.

I use Laptops like this simply because it fits inside my Semi Truck and takes up very little space. And it can be safely stowed away while I drive. So when it is the only PC available for certain situations like mine with limited space and the added portability for when I'm out of the truck it is my Go to unit. The unfortunate part being the price of course. And I miss the 18.4" screen of my old Toshiba Qosmio.

I have had a laptop like this. Core i7 was beefy enough, 32GB RAM had plenty of head room for gaming and having 100 tabs in Chrome open at the same time. 4 SSDs for plenty of space, SATA and mSATA only though. The 2 AMD 240x video cards in crossfire was nice until the limits of the cooling system made itself apparent and both the GPUs have now failed. And the thing was damn heavy. Was nice to have a 17in screen though.

At this point in time, with the advent of portable monitors, desktop replacement machines seem a bit obsolete. If you have access to power you may as well get a SFF machine and a portable display.

  60. Marcus Borderlands

    Marcus Borderlands17 hari yang lalu

not at all, an sff build is just way more hassle, and portable monitors just add more credibility to a desktop replacement lappy. now you can have a desktop replacement pc with a monitor to either side, and it fits in a backpack

  67. Hjorth87

    Hjorth8721 hari yang lalu

@LTT you should make some pieces about minimalist setups for people who don't really have the space, looking into different solutions, buildwise, compared to using your TV for gaming, having a gaming laptop or some sort of collapsible furniture to game at.

  68. Hjorth87

Possible buyers. People who live in expensive areas and have enough money for high end gaming PCs but not enough for an apartment/house with more space for a dedicated gaming area. My family of two and two small kids live in a two bedroom apartment with one living room, and I did consider getting a gaming "laptop" in order to be able just to shove the thing into a bookshelf when not in use. I did end up prioritizing low noise and comfort (+ that my wife was cool with my gaming pc/desk being a permanent part of the interior), but I can totally see people go that way.

Because some of us are in insecure housing situations and we need to be able to carry our lives on our backs at all times. And you're not going to get that from a desktop. And also, just because we can't afford a house doesn't mean we don't have jobs and can't afford a decent laptop. You joke that this is a pure gaming rig. But being "Gaming" usually means it is top of the line and future proof for about 10 years. A big upfront investment but a massive boost in quality of life for an essential piece of equipment we are likely to spend 16+ hours a day on and run our entire life through.

Had a roomate who called theese laptops "Desktop Replacments" sounds odd but the logic was interesting. If your someone holding on to a 10 year old desktop and want to use a modern cpu platform while wating for another node shrink it makes sense to buy. Sure your laptop willl be a little behind your desktop when the node shrink hits consumer hardware but its so power/performance dense that it doesnt matter and youll get a long life or greaat resale value during the wait.

Because i play in my work truck for 10 hours a day. Reasons? I spend my time between 2 houses, and i work away and in a work truck on standby for 10-12 hours a day for 21-60 days straight. New laptops are thin, flimsy and get extremely hot, i had a MSI 1070 prior, and it ran in the 90C's (not vram) Cooling is a issue, when you have the sun beating on the surface, some days i couldnt use the keys because the surface is that hot. Warranty? Alienware offers the accidental damage and fully replaces it... So thats a big one.. My A51-M r2 feels like a tank, 240hz monitor 3ms display, mechanical keys.. 2 nvme slots + 1 ssd, 2080 Super, with a i9-10900k? Sign me up. the speakers are unreal too for watching tv/movies i dont need to use a headphones or ear buds.

I would go with fatter laptop that has better cooling and produces less noise, unfortunately such laptops are rare.

I have one, different brand but same chassis! My main reason, I live in a one bed flat with partner. I don't have space for permanent desktop set up. I work in 3D modelling and rendering, I enjoy gaming. If we move to a bigger place I'll plug two screens into it and call it good. It's an absolute powerhouse!
